A Proverb a Day Keeps the Police Away! Join me as we read through the book of Proverbs in the Message Version this month! I love verse 18: "Walk Straight, Live well, and be saved! A Devious life is a doomed life." Where in your life are you holding onto some devious ways? Is it devious to not be honest with someone about how you are doing or something that you are going through?
The consequences of sin: Proverbs 28:13 states, "Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy." This verse highlights the importance of admitting our sins and seeking forgiveness, as concealing them will lead to negative consequences and hinder our prosperity.
The value of hard work: Proverbs 28:19 says, "Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty." This verse emphasizes the importance of diligence and hard work, which lead to prosperity and abundanceToday's reading is packed full of wisdom, insight, and good instruction for living to keep you on the right path! "Good Instruction For Living: Proverbs 28 - A Light, Fun Reading"
Summary/Abstract Show Notes
Robert welcomed the viewer to Set Free 24/7 and introduced the Proverb a day to keep the police away. He said that Proverbs are full of wisdom and good instruction, even for those who don't follow a faith. Robert then joked about his jacket and said that God's Word can be fun. The Proverb of the day was from Proverbs 28 and was titled If You Desert God's Law. This Proverb talks about how the wicked are edgy with guilt, always ready to run away, while the honest people are relaxed and confident.
Robert then encouraged the viewer to explore more of God's Word. The conversation discussed the impact of wickedness and how it affects the poor. It is better to be poor and direct than rich and crooked. It is important to practice God's law, which will bring wisdom and a good reputation. It is better to be generous to the poor, rather than ignoring them and risking their curses.
The conversation concluded with the idea that having a tender heart leads to a blessed life, whereas having a hard heart leads to a hard life, and that it is important to give anger and grudges to God. In this episode, the speaker talks about the importance of surrounding yourself with people who are wiser than you and have more experience in life. He encourages listeners to find people who can pray for them, be transparent with them, and help sharpen their iron.
He emphasizes that real survivors learn wisdom from others and that by allowing them into your life, it can end up for the best. He finishes by reminding the audience to like and share the episode and to leave prayer requests in the comments if they need it.

0:01:09 Summary of Proverbs 28: Reflection on Doing Great Harm in Seemingly Harmless Ways 0:05:41 Episode 28: Real Survivors Learn Wisdom from Others Highlights
The other one that I put down was if you think you know it all, you're a fool for sure. Real survivors learn wisdom from others. One of the things that I did a little differently this time around when I got out of prison was started to surround myself with people that knew more than me, that were in recovery longer than me and had been part of a faith community longer than me. Shut your eyes to their needs and run a gauntlet of curses. And when corruption takes over, good people go underground. But when the crooks are thrown out, it's safe to come out. And friends, just like that, we are done with Chapter 28. Was there a verse in there that stood out to you? Or maybe something that you took from the whole theme of today?
For Chapter 28, I had written down a tender-hearted person lives a blessed life, and a hard-hearted person lives a hard life. A devious life is a doomed life. And the next section is titled doing Great Harm in Seemingly Harmless Ways. So work your garden. You'll end up with plenty of food, play and party, and you'll end up with an empty plate. Committed and persistent work pays off. Get-rich-quick schemes are ripoffs playing favorites is always a bad thing. You can do great harm in seemingly harmless ways. A miser in a hurry to get rich doesn't know that he'll end up broke in the end.

Summary/Abstract Show Notes The speaker had a seemingly perfect childhood growing up with a religious family on a farm and attending Christian schools. They would often go to visit their uncle and aunt in Illinois during the summers, and this is where they developed an interest in customer service and the market. Middle school was tough for the speaker as they only had one other classmate when they left 8th grade, and they had to reintegrate into a high school with friends who had been together for nearly a decade.
This made the speaker the outsider, living outside of town and not quite fitting in with their classmates. The speaker recounts his experience of feeling like an outsider in high school. He tried to fit in with different groups but felt like he didn't belong in any of them. He also had disciplinary issues and felt like the disciplinarian, Pete, had a personal vendetta against him. He accumulated 20 points by Christmas time and needed 21 to be expelled.
He felt like he couldn't do anything right and was constantly being watched by Pete. The speaker's story highlights the difficulties of navigating high school as an outsider. The speaker had a long school year ahead of him, but he made one mistake and got himself kicked out of high school in his senior year. He was smoking pot and using acid but still managed to graduate from South Christian High School, albeit without attending the graduation ceremony.
He felt a major disconnect with religion, people calling themselves Christians, and his family, as he was adopted when he was a baby. As an adopted kid, he had the desire to know his roots, and would often go to the farmers market in Chicago with his parents. His parents were honest with him about his adoption, which he appreciated.
The speaker had a difficult upbringing due to a disconnect with family, religion, and Christianity. He joined the military as a way to escape and start anew. Upon graduating from boot camp, he got a tattoo of a devil flipping off with both hands to symbolize his resentment towards God, religion, and Christianity. He had four kids at a young age, but his marriage struggled due to his inability to communicate with his wife, eventually leading to divorce.
This divorce was particularly difficult for him because he had grown up in a Christian home and was expected to live up to that standard. Running even blessed me with my wife. I met my wife in 2019 as she was entering a program through the Amway Riverbank Run that I was exiting, and we both didn't want a relationship at that point, but God knew what he wanted, and God knew what he was going to bring together.
So while I don't run as much as I used to, I still have a love for running and the community of people around running and all of the beautiful gifts, including my wife, that running has given me. And I went out there that day, and I did that. And I remember the sense of accomplishment and just feeling if you just stick your mind to it one step in front of the other, one moment at a time, you're going to get through this. You can do anything for a couple of hours. And running in the community that's around, running just ended up being such an important part. People were so supportive. I was able to share parts of my story and my journey with people as we were running.
But I ran a half mile a day, three to four times a week. And then the next week I did it again. And then the next week I added a little bit of distance and I kept adding a little bit of distance and I would be out there for a little bit longer. Each time the weight started to come off, started to feel a little better. I had no idea that the running seed that was planted in my heart would then end up being such an important part of my recovery. And also. My reintegration back in from prison when I got out of prison in 2015.

"How To Sharpen Yourself With Friends: Proverbs 27"
Summary/Abstract Show Notes
Robert welcomes the listener to Set Free 24/7, a program where a proverb is shared every day. He expresses his gladness that the listener is there, suggesting that it is not by chance, but providential. He then shares the proverb of the day, titled You Don't Know Tomorrow, which speaks of not announcing what one will do tomorrow, as well as not drawing attention to oneself. He compares carrying a log across the shoulders and hefting a boulder with the arms to the burden of having to put up with a fool.
He ends the conversation by wishing the listener a good day. In essence, Robert encourages the listener to be mindful of the words they speak, to not be boastful, and to be aware of the people they surround themselves with. This conversation is based on Proverbs 27. It emphasizes the importance of expressing approval and being a good friend. A spoken reprimand is better than approval that's never expressed, and sweet friendship refreshes the soul.
Friendships should be cherished and nurtured since growth can only happen in relationships. Additionally, one should be wary of accepting anything from a stranger, as hell has a voracious appetite and one should never take their friends and family for granted. Finally, one's face mirrors their heart, and silver and gold are only tested by fire. In this episode, the speaker discusses Proverbs 27 and encourages those listening to be a friend to get a friend.
He suggests that people reach out, show up for coffee, and do life with people, no matter the heat or sparks that may be generated. He also encourages listeners to share prayer requests in the comments section. This Proverb a Day challenge has been fun for the speaker and he hopes it has been beneficial for the listeners as well. He encourages them to like and share the episode and reminds them that he reads all the comments. He wishes them a great day and looks forward to seeing them tomorrow for Proverb 28.

0:05:53 Episode 27: Iron Sharpens Iron
Highlights How do we sharpen who we are? We do it in relationships with others. One person encounters another and there is an interchange of thoughts, feelings, ideas, and values. There's little growth in isolation. Isolated from others, we become dull. Our thinking is blunted, as are our feelings. And with our feelings, our faith, our hope, our love. The only way to remedy that is to routinely rub up against other people despite the heat that may generate or the sparks that may fly.
What did you get out of today? Was there a verse or a theme that kind of stood out to you? The verses that stood out to me were verse number five. A spoken reprimand is better than approval that's never expressed. I've said this numerous times while we've been doing Proverbs. Just go say something nice to somebody. How many times do we think about something, a compliment for somebody, and we just never take the time to send it? And sending those compliments can literally be a game-changer for somebody. Be wary of accepting what a transient has pawned.
If you wake your friend in the early morning by shouting Rise and shine, it will sound to him more like a curse than a blessing. A nagging spouse is like a drip, drip, drip of a leaky faucet. You can't turn it off and you can't get away from it. And this next section is titled your Face Mirrors Your Heart. So you use steel to sharpen steel, and one friend sharpens another.

"Understanding The Consequences Of Foolishness In Proverbs 26" Summary/Abstract Show Notes This conversation is about Proverbs Chapter 26 and its warnings about foolishness. Eugene Peterson states that throughout Proverbs, the way of the wise and the way of the fool are contrasted.
In Proverbs 26, there is a concentration of verses on foolishness and its consequences. The speaker in the conversation then goes on to explain that Proverbs warns us that foolishness can be just as destructive as wickedness, and can sometimes be even more so.
The speaker encourages the listener to pay attention to these warnings, as they can be very helpful in avoiding foolishness and its consequences. The speaker then encourages the listener to dive into Proverbs 26 and see what it has to say about being a fool. In Proverbs 26, the author warns against responding to the foolishness of a fool, as it will only make you look foolish yourself.
He also advises against sending a message by a fool, as it will only lead to trouble. When someone speaks warmly to you, it is best not to trust them, as they may be plotting to take advantage of you. Malice and spite will only backfire, and liars will ultimately be exposed for their dishonesty.
The proverb ends by cautioning against honoring a fool, as it is like putting a mud brick on a marble column. The speaker reflects on how Jesus brings up proverbs and uses them to make people think and how it can be compared to giving a drunk person a scalpel. They encourage the listeners to share their need for prayer and to like and share the episode if they found it useful. Finally, they remind the listeners to come back tomorrow for Proverbs chapter 27.

"Wise Planning And Strategic Thinking Outweigh Strength And Force - Proverbs 24" Summary/Abstract This conversation is about Proverbs 24, which encourages people to use their intelligence instead of relying on physical strength. It suggests that wisdom, understanding and knowledge are essential for building a strong foundation for a house and furnishing it with beautiful furniture.
The speaker also encourages the audience to stay away from bad people, as they are always causing trouble and spreading chaos. He also encourages the audience to keep a good streak alive, and to be inspired to do the same. In conclusion, the speaker emphasizes the importance of using intelligence and knowledge to build a strong and beautiful home. This conversation is about being wise and intelligent over being strong and powerful. It emphasizes the importance of strategic planning and good counsel, as well as the fact that those who are always looking to do evil will be seen as fools. It also talks about rescuing the perishing and helping those who are in need. It encourages people to respect their leaders and to fear God.
Finally, it encourages people to eat honey and knowledge instead of trying to be like the wicked. The overall message is that it is better to be wise and intelligent than strong and powerful, and that it is important to have good counsel, help those in need, fear God and respect leaders. The conversation discussed Proverbs 24 and the importance of not going along with injustice. It was highlighted that those who expose the wicked will be thanked and rewarded, and contrasted with those who whitewash the wicked.
The conversation then discussed the importance of having wisdom and counsel from other people and the dangers of relying on strength of force to achieve goals. One of the verses mentioned was “Rescue the perishing, don’t hesitate to step in and help.” The conversation concluded with the importance of being honest and how it can be like a warm hug. In this episode, Eugene Peterson wrote about verses eleven and twelve from Proverbs chapter 24. He explains how it is important to be wise for our own sake, but also to help others on the road with us.
To do that, we need to break the walls of self-preservation and look to Christ to see how he helped. The speaker encourages the listeners to share this episode with someone who might need encouragement and to leave prayer requests in the comments. He ends the episode by reminding everyone that life is good and God is always good. We're called to rescue the perishing and to make sure that we don't hesitate to step in and help. To do that, we have to break down the walls of self preservation that separate us from the needs of those that are around us. And the best way to do that is to look to Christ and see how he did it.
So friends, that's all I have here for today. That's the end of chapter 24. Just like that, we're done a little bit of Bible in every day starts to change things in your life. So I hope you've seen some things changing. One of the verses that stood out to me was rescue the perishing, don't hesitate to step in and help. And this was about that. It's called, don't hesitate to help. About verses eleven and twelve, Eugene Peterson had written here it's not enough to be wise for our own sakes. There are others on the road with us who may need a helping hand or an encouraging word. The way of wisdom develops an urgent sense of concern for these others. There was a quick little pause that said, how much do you rely on strength of force to achieve your goals?
How much do you rely on wisdom, including the wisdom of other people? Are you out getting the counsel of other people before you make big decisions? Are you bouncing ideas off of them? Are you seeing, is this even a good idea? What do you think of this? It's always good to have some people in your corner that you can bounce some life off of and see, what do you think? Or how have you dealt with something like this? That's always valuable to surround yourself with people who have gone before you. It's better to be wise than strong, because intelligence outranks muscle any day.

"Proverbs 22: The Cure For Troubles Comes Through Discipline And Generosity"
Summary/Abstract Show Notes
Robert welcomed everyone to the Set Free 24 7 proverb a day and encouraged them to start a streak of their own. He explained that the goal of the proverb days is to have less negative police interaction. Robert then began reading Proverbs 22 from the Message Version, which is a paraphrase of the Bible. He titled this proverb as The Cure Comes Through Discipline.
The proverb states that having a sterling reputation is better than striking it rich, and a gracious spirit is better than money. It also explains that the rich and poor can shake hands as equals, as God made them both. Overall, the proverb emphasizes the importance of having a good reputation and a gracious spirit, rather than relying on wealth or material possessions. The speaker talks about the payoff for meekness and fear of God, and warns against the danger of walking blindly and the consequences of sowing sin.
They also advise to point their kids in the right direction, and to stay clear of borrowing and putting themselves under the power of the rich. Generous hands are blessed, and the speaker suggests to kick out troublemakers and take a break from bickering. They further emphasize the importance of having a pure heart and good leadership, as well as knowledge and truth. Finally, they provide the 30 Precepts of the Sages, which encourage trusting in God, taking heart to wisdom, and following tested guidelines. This passage from Proverbs 22 encourages readers to be conscious of their actions and how it might influence others.
Eugene Peterson reminds us that Christians should not take advantage of the weak or poor, and should instead use their faith and the example of Christ to lead others in the right direction. He cautions against getting involved in activities such as gambling and boundary line shifting that can lead to potential loss and consequences. Additionally, Peterson encourages readers to observe and admire skilled workers, as they are always in demand and respected. Ultimately, he reminds us that it is more effective to lead by example rather than instruction manuals or statistics.
